The highest Jyotirlinga shrine at 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, accessible only from May to November, and one of the Char Dhams.
📜 History & Origin
Mentioned in the Mahabharata as Kedara Kshetra. Adi Shankaracharya built the current stone temple in the 8th century CE and attained samadhi behind the temple. The temple survived the catastrophic 2013 Uttarakhand floods miraculously when a massive boulder diverted the debris flow around the temple. Major restoration was completed by 2021.
🏛 Architecture & Structure
Massive rectangular stone construction using interlocking grey granite slabs (estimated 12-14 tonnes each) without mortar - an engineering marvel considering the 3583m altitude. Thick walls insulate against severe cold. Nagara style shikhara. The triangular Jyotirlinga is in the inner sanctum. Adi Shankaracharya samadhi shrine is located behind the temple.
