Sit facing east, take water in the right hand, and make a formal sankalp — stating your name, gotra, the occasion for the puja, and your intention. This resolves your consciousness with the puja.
No puja begins without honouring Lord Ganesha first. Offer flowers, kumkum, and akshat (rice) to Ganesha, chant the Ganesha mantra 21 times, and seek his blessings for an obstacle-free puja.

Fill a copper or brass kalash with water, mango leaves, and a coconut. The kalash represents Lord Vishnu and the waters of all sacred rivers. Place it on a mound of rice at the centre of your puja space.
Bathe the Satyanarayan idol or image with the five sacred substances: milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar water — each one offered while chanting the corresponding mantra.

मधुना पादयोर्नमः।
The complete offering of sixteen items to Lord Satyanarayan — from the seat (asana) to the farewell (visarjana). Each offering is made with a specific mantra. This is the heart of the puja.
The five-chapter Katha from the Skanda Purana is read or listened to with full attention. All attendees should be seated. The Prasad (sheera) should be prepared before the Katha begins and offered to the deity.
Conclude with the Satyanarayan Aarti, circling the flame clockwise. Seek forgiveness for any inadvertent errors (Kshama Prarthana). Distribute the prasad to all attendees with both hands.
