💎 About Nathdwara Shrinathji Temple

🏭

🕐 The Sacred Legend

The Shrinathji idol (7-year-old Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill) was originally at Govardhan near Mathura. When Aurangzeb ordered its destruction in 1669, priests fled with it on a bullock cart. The cart wheels sank into the ground at Sinhad (now Nathdwara) — taken as a divine sign that Krishna chose this spot as his new home.

📜 History & Origin

The idol was originally at Govardhan Hill near Mathura. When Aurangzeb threatened to destroy it in 1669, the priests transported it to Rajasthan on a bullock cart. The cart wheels sank into the ground at Sinhad (now Nathdwara) — interpreted as the deity choosing this location. Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar built the temple here in 1672.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

Rajput style temple complex with large courtyard. The main sanctum is relatively small but the surrounding complex has halls for different services. Famous for Pichhwai paintings — large cloth paintings depicting Shrinathji leelas that form the backdrop for the deity. The idol itself is carved from black marble.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Eight darshans daily following the daily routine of Krishna — from waking (Mangala at 5:45 AM) to sleeping (Shayan at 9:30 PM). Each darshan has specific offerings and music. Shringar darshan (7:15 AM) is the most popular. Special Annakoot darshan on the day after Diwali features 56 food items offered to the deity.

🎉 Major Festivals & Occasions

Annakoot (day after Diwali) - most spectacular with 56 bhog items; Janmashtami - midnight darshan; Holi - famous Phoolon ki Holi (flower holi) at the temple; Govardhan Puja.
