Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple Varanasi

🕐 The Sacred Legend

Sankat Mochan means the remover of all troubles. This temple was established by Saint Tulsidas, the author of the Ramcharitmanas, in the 16th century CE. It is said Tulsidas had a divine vision of Hanuman here. The idol at Sankat Mochan shows Hanuman in a seated position — rare and considered especially powerful for removing obstacles. The temple was targeted in a terrorist bombing in 2006 but devotees continued worship the very next day, a testament to its spiritual power.

📜 History & Origin

Tulsidas established this temple after seeing Hanuman in human form here. He wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and Ramcharitmanas while residing in Varanasi. The original temple was simple but has been expanded over centuries. The 2006 bomb blast at the temple during the evening aarti killed several devotees but the temple continued uninterrupted.

Medium sized temple complex with a forest setting. The main Hanuman idol faces south (towards Lanka) in the veer posture. Adjacent Shiva temple. Surrounded by trees giving a forest ashram atmosphere. The sabha mandap hosts the annual music festival.

Daily aartis. Tuesday and Saturday special pujas with huge crowds. Besan ke Ladoo (gram flour sweets) are the traditional prasad. Hanuman Chalisa recitation sessions daily.
