Chhath Puja is one of the oldest Vedic festivals dedicated to Surya (Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (the 6th form of Shakti, Usha). According to the Puranas, Draupadi performed Chhath to help the Pandavas regain their kingdom. In the Ramayana, Sita is said to have observed Chhath on the banks of the Ganga. The ritual of standing in water at sunrise and sunset symbolises the cosmic union of the devotee with the life-giving Sun.
