Vivah Panchami 2026 is on Monday, 14 December 2026, Margashirsha Shukla Panchami (the tithi runs 13 Dec, 4:48 PM – 14 Dec, 7:17 PM). It celebrates the wedding of Shri Ram and Mata Sita in Mithila. Temples re-enact the wedding, devotees read the Ram–Sita vivah from the Ramcharitmanas, and Janakpur and Ayodhya hold grand processions.

🏹The swayamvar in Mithilaमिथिला का स्वयंवर
King Janaka of Mithila found Sita in a furrow while ploughing the earth and raised her as his daughter. He kept in his palace the mighty bow of Shiva, Pinaka, which few could even move — and he vowed that Sita would marry the one who could string it.
Kings and princes from across the land failed. Then young Ram, who had come to Mithila with his brother Lakshman and the sage Vishwamitra, lifted the bow with ease; as he drew the string, it broke with a sound that shook the worlds. Sita placed the varmala around his neck.
King Dasharath was summoned from Ayodhya, and on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami Ram and Sita were married with full Vedic rites — along with Lakshman and Urmila, Bharat and Mandavi, and Shatrughna and Shrutakirti.
मिथिला के राजा जनक को हल चलाते समय धरती की कूँड़ से सीता मिलीं और उन्होंने उन्हें पुत्री के रूप में पाला। उनके महल में शिव का महान धनुष पिनाक रखा था, जिसे बहुत कम लोग हिला भी पाते थे — और उन्होंने प्रण किया कि जो इस पर प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाएगा, सीता उसी से विवाह करेंगी।
देश-देश के राजा और राजकुमार असफल रहे। तब भाई लक्ष्मण और ऋषि विश्वामित्र के साथ मिथिला आए युवा राम ने सहज ही धनुष उठा लिया; प्रत्यंचा खींचते ही वह तीनों लोकों को कँपा देने वाले नाद के साथ टूट गया। सीता ने उनके गले में वरमाला डाल दी।
अयोध्या से राजा दशरथ बुलाए गए, और मार्गशीर्ष शुक्ल पंचमी को वैदिक विधि से राम-सीता का विवाह हुआ — साथ ही लक्ष्मण-उर्मिला, भरत-मांडवी और शत्रुघ्न-श्रुतकीर्ति का भी।
💐Significanceमहत्त्व
Ram and Sita are the ideal of dharma within marriage — devotion, steadfastness and mutual respect. Couples pray on this day for a harmonious married life, and unmarried devotees pray for a good match.
Interestingly, in parts of Mithila families avoid fixing their own weddings on Vivah Panchami, remembering how much Sita suffered after her marriage. The day is for celebrating the divine couple.
राम और सीता विवाह में धर्म का आदर्श हैं — भक्ति, दृढ़ता और परस्पर सम्मान। इस दिन दंपती सुखी वैवाहिक जीवन की प्रार्थना करते हैं, और अविवाहित भक्त योग्य जीवनसाथी की कामना करते हैं।
रोचक बात है कि मिथिला के कुछ भागों में परिवार विवाह पंचमी को अपने विवाह तय करने से बचते हैं, यह स्मरण करते हुए कि विवाह के बाद सीता ने कितने कष्ट सहे। यह दिन दिव्य दंपती के उत्सव का है।

Place Ram and Sita on a decorated seat, with Ram on the right. Dress Ram in yellow and Sita in red.
सजे आसन पर राम-सीता को विराजमान करें, राम दाहिनी ओर। राम को पीले और सीता को लाल वस्त्र पहनाएँ।

Offer haldi, kumkum, akshat, flowers and tulsi, and light a ghee lamp.

Exchange the varmalas between the two images and tie them together with kalawa (gathbandhan).
