👑Mahabali and Vamanaमहाबली और वामन
Mahabali, grandson of Prahlad, was an asura king so just that his kingdom had no poverty, no lies and no fear. The gods, losing their place, turned to Vishnu.
Vishnu came as Vamana, a small Brahmin boy, and asked Mahabali for three steps of land. Though warned by his guru Shukracharya, Mahabali gave his word. Vamana grew to cosmic size, covered earth and heaven in two strides and asked where to place the third. Mahabali bowed his head.
Pleased by his generosity, Vishnu sent him to rule the netherworld and granted that he could visit his people once a year. Onam is that homecoming — Kerala shows its king that his people are still happy.
प्रह्लाद के पौत्र महाबली ऐसे न्यायप्रिय असुर राजा थे कि उनके राज्य में न दरिद्रता थी, न झूठ, न भय। अपना स्थान खोते देवता विष्णु के पास गए।
विष्णु वामन — एक छोटे ब्राह्मण बालक — के रूप में आए और महाबली से तीन पग भूमि माँगी। गुरु शुक्राचार्य की चेतावनी के बावजूद महाबली ने वचन दे दिया। वामन विराट हो गए, दो पगों में धरती और स्वर्ग नाप लिए और पूछा कि तीसरा पग कहाँ रखें। महाबली ने सिर झुका दिया।
उनकी उदारता से प्रसन्न होकर विष्णु ने उन्हें पाताल का राज्य दिया और वर्ष में एक बार अपनी प्रजा से मिलने आने का वर दिया। ओणम वही घर-वापसी है — केरल अपने राजा को दिखाता है कि उनकी प्रजा अब भी सुखी है।
🌸The ten daysदस दिन
Atham (day 1): the pookalam begins with one ring of flowers before the house and grows each day. Chithira to Pooradam: homes are cleaned, new clothes (onakodi) bought, and clay figures of Mahabali and Vamana (Onathappan) placed in the pookalam on Pooradam.
Uthradom (day 9) is “first Onam”, the eve with last-minute shopping. Thiruvonam (day 10) is the main day: a large pookalam, the sadya on banana leaves with over twenty dishes, and family time. Celebrations continue for two more days with vallam kali and pulikali.
अत्तम (पहला दिन): घर के सामने फूलों के एक घेरे से पूक्कलम शुरू होता है और रोज़ बढ़ता है। चित्तिरा से पूराडम तक: घर साफ़ होते हैं, नए वस्त्र (ओणक्कोडी) खरीदे जाते हैं, और पूराडम पर महाबली और वामन की मिट्टी की मूर्तियाँ (ओणत्तप्पन) पूक्कलम में रखी जाती हैं।
