North India starts the Vikram Samvat with Chaitra in spring. Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan follow the older kartikadi reckoning, in which the year turns on Kartika Shukla Pratipada — so Diwali night is the last night of the old year, and the morning after is the first day of the new one.
Traders closed their old accounts on Diwali with the chopda (Sharda) puja; the new year opens with a fresh book, and the shops themselves reopen a few days later on Labh Pancham.

🧂Sabras, darshan and Saal Mubarakसबरस, दर्शन और साल मुबारक
Before dawn, vendors go door to door calling “sabras!” — salt, whose name means “all tastes”; buying it first thing is a wish for a year that holds every good flavour.
Families bathe early, wear new clothes, draw rangoli and hang torans of mango leaves and marigolds. They visit the temple — Haveli and Swaminarayan temples display a vast Annakut of sweets and dishes — then go from house to house to touch the feet of elders and share sweets and farsan.
