Chitragupta Puja 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November 2026 — Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, the same day as Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya). The puja is done in the aparahna while Dwitiya prevails: 1:10 PM – 3:20 PM in New Delhi; Patna and Kolkata are about half an hour earlier (see the city table). Dwitiya tithi runs 10 Nov, 2:00 PM – 11 Nov, 3:53 PM. Kayastha families — Srivastava, Saxena, Mathur, Nigam, Asthana, Karna, Ambashtha and the other lineages traced to Chitragupta’s twelve sons — worship him with their pens, inkpots (dawat) and account books, which is why the day is also called Kalam-Dawat Puja.

📜Who is Chitragupta?

When Yama Dharmaraja was given the task of judging every living being, he found the work too vast for one judge and asked Brahma for a scribe. Brahma sat in meditation for a thousand years; when he opened his eyes, a dark, radiant figure stood before him holding a pen and an inkpot. Because he had come from Brahma’s own body (kaya), Brahma called him Kayastha, and named him Chitragupta.

Chitragupta keeps the record of every deed — tradition explains the name as one who writes down both the visible (chitra) and the hidden (gupta) acts. When a soul reaches Yamaloka, he reads out its account and Yama decides its course. He is honoured as the patron and ancestor of the Kayasthas; his two consorts, Nandini and Shobhavati (Iravati), are remembered as the mothers of the twelve sons from whom the twelve Chitraguptavanshi lineages descend.

🖋️Why the pen rests after Diwali

In many Kayastha homes the pens are set down after the Diwali puja and nothing is written for a day or two. On Yama Dwitiya the family gathers, places the pens, inkpot, ledgers and the children’s books before Chitragupta, worships them with roli, chandan, akshat and flowers — and only then picks the pen up again, first to write the lekha before the deity. A popular legend links the custom to Chitragupta laying down his own pen; whatever the story, the meaning is plain: the tool of one’s livelihood is first offered back to the one who keeps the account.

The pen worshipped today is believed to be blessed for the year ahead, which is why students bring their pens and books, accountants their ledgers and writers their notebooks.

📝The lekha — a letter to Chitragupta

The heart of the puja is a sheet of white paper written with the newly worshipped pen. At the top comes “Shri Ganeshaya Namah”, then “Om Chitraguptaya Namah” eleven times. Many families add the household’s income and expenses for the year (aay-vyay), the name and address of the person writing, and a short prayer asking for wisdom, a fair livelihood and forgiveness for the year’s mistakes. The sheet is signed and placed before Chitragupta with the pen.

Kayastha associations in Patna, Ranchi, Lucknow and elsewhere hold community pujas where members offer their written accounts together. The idea is the one that runs through the whole festival: before the god who keeps the record of deeds, we keep an honest record of our own.

🤝Yama Dwitiya: Bhai Dooj and Chitragupta together

Kartika Shukla Dwitiya is Yama’s day. Sisters apply tilak to their brothers in memory of Yamuna feeding her brother Yama, and the same afternoon Yama’s scribe is worshipped. In the Puranic katha told today, Bhishma explains the day to Yudhishthira and tells of King Saudas, a man of many misdeeds who once kept this vow — worshipping Yama and Chitragupta with lamps and offerings — and was spared hell when Chitragupta read that act from his record.

So many families do both rites the same afternoon: the Bhai Dooj tilak, and the kalam-dawat puja. The full katha, step-by-step vidhi and the lekha format are on our Chitragupta puja vidhi page.

🪔How to do Chitragupta (kalam-dawat) puja at home

  1. Prepare the altar

Bathe, clean the puja place and set Chitragupta’s picture on a chowki covered with a yellow or white cloth. Place the kalash beside it and arrange the pens, inkpot, ledgers and books in front.

  2. Ganesha and sankalp

In the aparahna muhurat (1:10 PM – 3:20 PM in New Delhi — check your city), worship Ganesha first, then take water, akshat and a flower in the right hand and resolve to worship Chitragupta and Yama Dharmaraja.

  3. Worship Chitragupta

Offer roli, chandan, akshat, flowers, the lamp and dhoop to Chitragupta while reciting “Masibhajana-samyuktash-charasi…”, then offer the naivedya.

  4. Worship the pen and inkpot

Tie kalava on the pen and inkpot, apply roli and chandan, and offer akshat and flowers to them and to the books — they stand for Chitragupta’s own pen and inkpot.

  5. Write the lekha

With the worshipped pen write “Shri Ganeshaya Namah”, then “Om Chitraguptaya Namah” eleven times, your income and expenses and a short prayer; sign it and place it before Chitragupta.

  6. Katha, aarti and prasad

Read or listen to the Yama Dwitiya katha, do the aarti and share the prasad. From now on the pen can be used again — let the first thing you write in the year be something good.
