Saraswati सरस्वती
Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts. Dressed in white and seated on a lotus or swan with her veena, book and mala, she is worshipped by students, musicians and writers — especially on Vasant Panchami, when children write their first letters.
सरस्वती विद्या, वाणी, संगीत और कलाओं की देवी हैं। श्वेत वस्त्रों में, कमल या हंस पर वीणा, पुस्तक और माला लिए, वे विद्यार्थियों, संगीतकारों और लेखकों द्वारा पूजी जाती हैं — विशेषकर वसंत पंचमी पर, जब बच्चे अपने पहले अक्षर लिखते हैं।
Who is Saraswati?सरस्वती कौन हैं?
In the Rig Veda Saraswati is the greatest of rivers, “best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses”, and also the power of inspired speech that comes to the seers. Over time the river faded and the goddess remained — wife of Brahma, mother of the Vedas and patron of all learning.
Every school assembly that sings “Ya Kundendu Tushara Hara Dhavala” calls on her. In Bengal and Bihar Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami puts books at her feet; in the South, Ayudha Puja and Vidyarambham in Navratri bless tools and first lessons. Her Sharada Peetha at Sringeri was founded by Adi Shankara.
ऋग्वेद में सरस्वती नदियों में श्रेष्ठ हैं — “अंबितमे नदीतमे देवितमे” — और ऋषियों को मिलने वाली प्रेरित वाणी की शक्ति भी। समय के साथ नदी लुप्त हो गई और देवी रह गईं — ब्रह्मा की पत्नी, वेदों की माता और सब विद्याओं की संरक्षिका।

Vasant and the first lettersवसंत और पहले अक्षर
Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of bright Magha, is said to be her appearance day. Families dress in yellow, place books and instruments before her, and small children are guided to write their first letters — akshar-abhyasam — so that learning begins with her blessing.
