💎 About Amarkantak Narmada Udgam Temple

The sacred origin of the holy Narmada river in the Maikal hills of Madhya Pradesh, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in central India.

🏭

🕐 The Sacred Legend

Amarkantak is where the sacred Narmada River originates from the Vindhya-Satpura mountain ranges. According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva created Narmada from his body to purify the world. The Narmada is considered more sacred than even the Ganga for those who see her — while Ganga purifies those who bathe in her, Narmada purifies merely by sight. The Kalchuri kings built the original temple complex here in ancient times.

📜 History & Origin

Amarkantak is mentioned in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Kalchuri dynasty built the existing ancient temples in the 10th-11th century CE. The sage Markandeya is believed to have meditated here. The Narmada Parikrama tradition has been maintained for centuries by sadhus and devotees.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

A group of ancient temples in the Panchmath complex. The Narmada Kund (origin spring) is the main sacred site. The Shri Yantra temple, Kapildhara waterfall (8 km), and Shonmuda (source of the Son river) are in the vicinity. The Kalchuri-period temples show medieval central Indian temple architecture.
