🕐 The Sacred Legend

Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, performed intense tapas to please Lord Shiva and asked for a Jyotirlinga to take to Lanka. Shiva agreed but warned it must not be placed on the ground. Vishnu tricked Ravana into placing it at Deoghar, and the Lingam became fixed there permanently. Uniquely, Baidyanath is both a Jyotirlinga AND a Shakti Peetha — Sati's heart fell here, making it the Hridaya Peeth of Goddess Jaya Durga.

Ravana meditated here and offered his ten heads one by one to Shiva. Shiva appeared and healed the heads, granting boons. The Shivalinga was brought by Ravana from Kailash but Vishnu tricked him into placing it here permanently. The temple has 22 subsidiary temples in its complex. During Shravan month the famous Kanwar Yatra brings 50 lakh devotees walking from Sultanganj carrying holy Ganga water.

The main Baidyanath temple is in the centre of 22 temples within the compound wall. The shikhara is decorated with a Panchshul (five-pronged trident). A damaged crown on top of the Shivalinga is said to be where Parvati struck it in anger. The complex is one of the most densely packed temple clusters in India.

Rudrabhishek with Ganga water is the primary puja — especially powerful during Shravan month. Morning Mangala Aarti at 4 AM. Sahasra Dhara (thousand stream) abhishek available. Devotees walk 105 km from Sultanganj carrying holy water in kanwars (bamboo structures) to offer to the Shivalinga.
