📜 History & Origin

Guru Gorakhnath is believed to have lived here in the medieval period (10th-12th century CE). The Nath tradition predates formal Hinduism and combines elements of yoga, tantra and devotion. The current temple complex was expanded significantly by various Nath Mahants. The present Mahant Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2017, bringing the temple into national prominence.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

Large temple complex with the main Gorakhnath shrine, a Shivalinga, various subsidiary shrines and the Math (monastery) buildings. The main sanctum has the footprints of Gorakhnath as the primary object of worship (his form is considered beyond physical idol worship). Large dharamshala for pilgrims. Famous Dham (sacred fire) burns continuously.

Daily puja of Gorakhnath padukas (footprints). The sacred Dhuni (fire) is never extinguished - a tradition of centuries. Yoga classes offered by the Math. Havan and special pujas on festival days.

Air: Gorakhpur Airport (7 km) - connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow. Rail: Gorakhpur Junction (5 km) - one of the busiest railway junctions in India. Road: Lucknow to Gorakhpur (273 km, 5 hrs); Varanasi (200 km, 4 hrs). Local: auto/tempo from station.
