📜 History & Origin

Haridwar is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism. King Vikramaditya built the main ghat structure in memory of his brother Bhartrihari who meditated here. The Kumbh Mela has been held here every 12 years since time immemorial. In 2021 Haridwar Kumbh drew 30 lakh pilgrims in a single day despite COVID restrictions.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

Series of ghats along the Ganga with the Brahmakund at the centre where the Vishnu footprint is enshrined. The upper Har Ki Pauri is the most sacred bathing area with chain railings to help devotees in the fast-flowing Ganga. Numerous temples line the ghats. At night the entire ghat is illuminated and the aarti seen from across the river is spectacular.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Ganga Aarti twice daily - morning and evening. Priests from the ghat temples perform synchronised aarti with large camphor lamps while bells ring and conches blow. Devotees float diyas (earthen lamps) on the Ganga. Pind daan (ancestor offerings) performed here year-round.

🚌 How to Reach

Air: Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun (35 km). Rail: Haridwar Railway Station (2 km from ghat) - excellent connectivity from Delhi (4 hrs), Mumbai, Chennai. Road: Delhi to Haridwar (220 km, 5 hrs on NH-58). Rishikesh (25 km) and Dehradun (54 km) nearby.

Hundreds of hotels from Rs. 500 to Rs. 10,000. GMVN Tourist Complex. Birla Dharamshala (excellent facilities). ISKCON Haridwar guesthouse. Most affordable are the dharamshalas near the ghat.
