Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain

📜 History & Origin

Ancient references in the Skanda Purana and Mahabharat. The original temple was destroyed by Iltutmish of the Delhi Sultanate in 1234 CE. Maratha king Ranoji Shinde rebuilt the current five-story structure in 1734 CE. The Mahakal Lok Corridor was inaugurated in 2022, expanding the complex with 900 metre grand promenade with 200 statues.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

Five-storey structure with the Jyotirlinga in the basement (unusual - most Shivalingas are above ground). Each floor has a different deity. The unique south-facing Lingam is a Swayambhu (self-manifested). The new Mahakal Lok corridor features massive sculptures depicting scenes from Shiva Purana along an 850m walkway.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Bhasma Aarti (4:00 AM) - the deity is anointed with sacred ash while priests perform rituals with drum-beats. This is considered the most powerful puja in India. Regular darshan from 7 AM. Naivedya Aarti (7:30 AM), Mahabhog (10:30 AM), Sandhya Aarti (5 PM), Shayan Aarti (10:30 PM). Bhasma Aarti booking mandatory, opens 30 days in advance.
