The most important temple of the Pushtimarg sect, housing the sacred idol of Shrinathji (child Krishna) brought from Govardhan Hill, drawing millions of Vaishnavas annually.
📜 History & Origin
The idol was originally at Govardhan Hill near Mathura. When Aurangzeb threatened to destroy it in 1669, the priests transported it to Rajasthan on a bullock cart. The cart wheels sank into the ground at Sinhad (now Nathdwara) — interpreted as the deity choosing this location. Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar built the temple here in 1672.
🏛 Architecture & Structure
Rajput style temple complex with large courtyard. The main sanctum is relatively small but the surrounding complex has halls for different services. Famous for Pichhwai paintings — large cloth paintings depicting Shrinathji leelas that form the backdrop for the deity. The idol itself is carved from black marble.
