Omkareshwar Temple

📜 History & Origin

King Mandhata performed severe tapasya here and was blessed by Shiva. The Narmada Parikrama (3 year walk around the entire Narmada river) begins and ends here. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have received his initiation from his guru Govindapada in a cave here. The famous Vindyavasini temple is also on the island.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

The main Omkareshwar temple is a multi-story structure on the northern part of the island. The Amareshwar temple is atop the Mandhata hill. Both are built in Bhumija style. The island has 68 tirthas (sacred spots) mentioned in ancient texts. Stone steps lead from the river ghats to the temples.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Daily aartis at dawn and dusk. Rudrabhishek available. The 8 km parikrama of the island touching all 68 tirthas is considered highly meritorious. Narmada Snana (bath in Narmada) before darshan is traditional.

Rail: Omkareshwar Road Railway Station (12 km) then taxi/bus. Nearest major rail: Khandwa (70 km) and Indore (77 km). Road: Indore to Omkareshwar (77 km, 2 hrs); from NH-3. Ferry boats cross the Narmada to reach the island.
