💎 About Vishnupad Temple Gaya

The sacred Vishnupad Temple in Gaya enshrining the footprint of Lord Vishnu, the premier site for Pitru Tarpan and Pind Daan in Hinduism.

🏭

🕐 The Sacred Legend

The demon Gayasura performed such severe penance that anyone who saw him attained moksha, disrupting the cosmic order. Lord Vishnu pushed Gayasura into the earth by placing his foot on his chest. The 40-cm footprint of Lord Vishnu remains imprinted in the Dharmasila basalt rock inside the temple. Lord Rama and Sita are believed to have performed Pind Daan here for King Dasharatha.

📜 History & Origin

Gaya s sanctity is described in detail in the Vayu Purana and Agni Purana. The demon Gayasura performed penance here and was subdued by Vishnu who placed his foot on the demon. The current magnificent 30-metre tall temple was built by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in 1787, the same patron who rebuilt Kashi Vishwanath.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

The temple has a 30 metre tall shikhara built by Ahilya Bai Holkar in Nagara style. The main sanctum houses the 40 cm footprint of Vishnu in a silver basin. 8 shikhara spires surround the main tower. The Phalgu river flows adjacent where Pind Daan rituals are performed.

🆣 Puja & Rituals
