Dev Deepawali 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, Kartik Purnima (tithi 23 Nov, 11:43 PM – 24 Nov, 8:24 PM). Fifteen days after Diwali, the gods themselves are said to descend to Kashi to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura. The Pradosh Kaal deepdan muhurat is 5:24 PM – 8:06 PM (New Delhi). Devotees take a holy dip, offer lamps to the Ganga and light diyas at home, temples and riverbanks.

🔱Tripurari Purnima: the storyत्रिपुरारी पूर्णिमा: कथा
The three sons of the asura Tarakasura — together called Tripurasura — won a boon of three flying cities, of gold, silver and iron, that could be destroyed only when they aligned in a single moment, and only by a single arrow. Secure in their cities, they tormented the three worlds.
The gods turned to Lord Shiva. With the earth as his chariot, the sun and moon as its wheels, Mount Meru as his bow and Vishnu himself as the arrow, Shiva waited for the instant the three cities aligned — and destroyed them with one shot. That day was Kartik Purnima, and Shiva became Tripurari, the destroyer of the three cities.
The gods celebrated by descending to Kashi, Shiva’s own city, and lighting lamps on the banks of the Ganga. Ever since, Kartik Purnima has been Dev Deepawali — the festival of lights of the gods.
तारकासुर के तीन पुत्रों — जिन्हें मिलाकर त्रिपुरासुर कहा जाता है — को सोने, चाँदी और लोहे के तीन उड़ते नगरों का वरदान मिला, जिन्हें केवल तभी नष्ट किया जा सकता था जब वे एक क्षण में एक सीध में आएँ, और केवल एक ही बाण से। अपने नगरों में सुरक्षित होकर उन्होंने तीनों लोकों को त्रस्त कर दिया।

देवताओं ने शिव की नगरी काशी में उतरकर गंगा तट पर दीप जलाकर उत्सव मनाया। तभी से कार्तिक पूर्णिमा देव दीपावली है — देवताओं का दीपोत्सव।
🌕Why Kartik Purnima is so sacredकार्तिक पूर्णिमा इतनी पावन क्यों
Kartik Purnima completes the holy month of Kartik, in which daily bathing, deepdan and Tulsi worship are observed. A dip in the Ganga or any sacred river on this day is considered especially purifying, and charity — lamps, food, clothes — is believed to bring lasting merit.
Several traditions meet on this full moon: Vishnu’s Matsya avatar is remembered, the Pushkar fair reaches its peak in Rajasthan, and Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti (Prakash Parv) on the same day.

🛕Dev Deepawali in Varanasiवाराणसी में देव दीपावली
In Varanasi more than eighty ghats, from Assi to Raj Ghat, are lined with lakhs of earthen diyas at dusk. The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh is performed on a grand scale, boats crowd the river, and the reflection of the lamps on the water makes the whole crescent of the city glow.
If you plan to visit, book boats and stays well ahead — this is one of the busiest nights of the year in Kashi.

Holy bath at dawnप्रातः पवित्र स्नान
Bathe in the Ganga or a sacred river at Brahma muhurta. At home, add a few drops of Ganga jal to your bath water.
ब्रह्म मुहूर्त में गंगा या किसी पवित्र नदी में स्नान करें। घर पर नहाने के जल में कुछ बूँदें गंगाजल मिलाएँ।
Worship Shiva and Vishnuशिव और विष्णु की पूजा
Offer water, milk and bel patra to the Shivling, and Tulsi and flowers to Vishnu. Many also read the Satyanarayan katha on this Purnima.
