Why the gods come to Kashiदेवता काशी क्यों आते हैं
On Kartika Purnima Lord Shiva destroyed the three flying cities of the demon Tripurasura with a single arrow, and is worshipped as Tripurari. The gods, freed from fear, came down to Kashi — Shiva’s own city — to celebrate on the banks of the Ganga with lamps. So the people of Varanasi light the ghats for the gods: the Diwali of the devas, fifteen days after the Diwali of humans.

Plan your eveningशाम की योजना
- Morning: Kartik snan. Take a dip in the Ganga at sunrise and give daan — the last and holiest bath of the Kartik month.
- Afternoon: reach early. Roads to the ghats close to vehicles in the afternoon; plan to walk the last stretch and be at your ghat 2–3 hours before sunset.
- Dusk: diyas and aarti. Lamps are lit on all the ghats at sunset, followed by the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh.
- Evening: by boat. A boat ride from Assi to Raj Ghat shows the whole crescent of lamps. Book well ahead through your hotel or a registered boatman and confirm life jackets.
- Light your own lamp. Float a leaf-cup diya (no plastic) or light lamps on the steps; even at home, light lamps at the door and before Shiva.
- सुबह: कार्तिक स्नान। सूर्योदय पर गंगा स्नान करें और दान दें — कार्तिक मास का अंतिम और सबसे पवित्र स्नान।

- शाम: नाव से। अस्सी से राजघाट तक नाव यात्रा में दीपों का पूरा अर्धचंद्र दिखता है। होटल या पंजीकृत नाविक से पहले बुक करें और लाइफ़ जैकेट सुनिश्चित करें।
- अपना दीप जलाएँ। पत्तों के दोने में दीया प्रवाहित करें (प्लास्टिक नहीं) या सीढ़ियों पर दीप जलाएँ; घर पर भी द्वार और शिव जी के सामने दीप जलाएँ।
