Panchami tithi runs 13 Nov, 8:42 PM – 14 Nov, 11:25 PM; the pratahkal puja muhurat is 6:42 AM – 10:17 AM in New Delhi. In Gujarat it closes the Diwali holidays: traders reopen their shops, worship Lakshmi and Ganesha, and write “Shubh” and “Labh” in the new chopda before the first sale of the year. Jains keep the same day as Gyan Panchami, honouring knowledge and sacred books.

✍️Shubh and Labh in the new bookनई बही में शुभ और लाभ
On Diwali night the new chopda (account book) was consecrated in the Sharda puja. On Labh Pancham the first real entry is made. A swastik is drawn in kumkum on the first page with “Shubh” on its left and “Labh” on its right — auspiciousness and gain, named in tradition as the two sons of Ganesha.
Only after the puja is the shop opened to customers and the first sale (bohni) made — often to a regular customer, at a fair price, as a good omen for the whole year.
दीपावली की रात शारदा पूजन में नई बही (चोपड़ा) का पूजन हुआ था। लाभ पंचम पर उसमें पहली वास्तविक प्रविष्टि होती है। पहले पन्ने पर कुमकुम से स्वस्तिक बनाया जाता है, बाईं ओर “शुभ” और दाईं ओर “लाभ” — मंगल और प्राप्ति, जिन्हें परंपरा में गणेश के दो पुत्र कहा गया है।
पूजा के बाद ही दुकान ग्राहकों के लिए खुलती है और पहली बिक्री (बोहनी) होती है — प्रायः किसी नियमित ग्राहक को, उचित दाम पर, पूरे वर्ष के शुभ शगुन के रूप में।
📚Gyan Panchami for Jainsजैनों के लिए ज्ञान पंचमी
For the Jain community the same tithi is Gyan Panchami (Jnana Panchami). Sacred texts are taken out of the libraries (gyan bhandars), cleaned, displayed and worshipped, and many keep a fast and pray for right knowledge.
Students and teachers also honour their books, pens and instruments on this day — a reminder that the truest wealth is knowledge.
जैन समुदाय के लिए यही तिथि ज्ञान पंचमी है। शास्त्र-भंडारों (ज्ञान भंडार) से पवित्र ग्रंथ निकाले, साफ़ किए, सजाए और पूजे जाते हैं, और कई लोग उपवास रखकर सम्यक् ज्ञान की प्रार्थना करते हैं।

Prepare the shopदुकान तैयार करें
Clean the shop or desk, hang a toran and draw rangoli at the entrance; sprinkle Ganga jal.

In the pratahkal muhurat (6:42 AM – 10:17 AM in New Delhi), light a lamp and offer kumkum, akshat, durva and a laddu to Ganesha with “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah”.

Worship Lakshmi with flowers, kumkum and the coins placed before her; chant “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah” 11 or 108 times.
