Step-by-step puja vidhi
- Prepare the space. Clean the home, draw a rangoli at the door with small footprints walking in, and set up the chowki in the north or north-east of the room.
- Place the idols. On the red cloth, place Ganesha on the left and Lakshmi on the right (as you face them). Put the kalash on a little rice to Lakshmi’s right, and the coins and account books in front.
- Purify and take sankalp. Sprinkle Ganga jal on yourself and the place. With water, akshat and a flower in your right hand, state your name, gotra, place and the wish to worship Lakshmi-Ganesha this Diwali, and release the water.
- Ganesha first. Offer water, roli, akshat, durva, flowers and a laddu to Ganesha while chanting “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah”.
- Invite Lakshmi (avahan). With folded hands invite the Goddess to the idol, then wash her feet with water and offer achaman.
- Bath. Bathe the idol (or a coin standing for her) with panchamrit, then clean water; wipe it dry.
- Dress and adorn. Offer the chunari or cloth, kumkum, haldi, chandan, akshat, a garland, flowers and kamal gatta.
- Lamps and incense. Light the big ghee lamp (it will burn through the night) and incense; offer dhoop and deep.
- Naivedya. Offer kheel-batashe, kheer, sweets and fruits, then paan with cloves and cardamom.
- Japa and stotra. Chant “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah” 108 times on a kamal gatta or sphatik mala; recite the Shri Suktam if you can.
- Kuber and chopda puja. Draw a swastik and “Shubh-Labh” on the first page of the new account book, place it before Lakshmi and worship it with roli, akshat and flowers; chant the Kuber mantra. Worship the pen and inkpot as Saraswati.
- Aarti. Sing Jai Ganesh Deva, then Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, ringing the bell and waving the camphor or ghee lamp; many families close with Om Jai Jagdish Hare.
- Pushpanjali and forgiveness. Offer flowers with both hands, walk round the chowki, and ask forgiveness for any mistake in the puja.
- Light the home. Carry diyas from the puja to the main door, kitchen, water place, tulsi, the safe and every room; keep one diya burning at the door through the night.
