- Roli or kumkum, and a little rice (akshat) for the tilak
- A ghee diya
- Sweets — often the brother’s favourite — and a dry coconut (gola) in many homes

Tilak vidhi, step by stepतिलक विधि, चरण-दर-चरण
- Morning. The sister bathes and keeps a light fast (optional) until the tilak; in many homes she first worships Yama, Yamuna and Chitragupta, or makes a simple chauk of flour on the floor.
- Seat the brother. In the aparahna muhurat (1:10 PM–3:20 PM in New Delhi on 11 Nov 2026), seat the brother facing north or east on a clean asana; cover his head with a handkerchief.
- Tilak. Apply roli and akshat on his forehead with the ring finger while saying the Bhai Dooj prayer; tie the kalawa on his right wrist.
- Aarti. Wave the ghee diya in aarti, offer sweets and feed him with your own hand; give him the coconut, paan and supari.
- Blessing and gift. The brother touches his sister’s feet (or she blesses him, as per family custom) and gives her a gift; the meal is eaten together at the sister’s home.
- सुबह। बहन स्नान करती है और तिलक तक हल्का उपवास (वैकल्पिक) रखती है; कई घरों में पहले यम, यमुना और चित्रगुप्त की पूजा होती है या आटे का सरल चौक बनाया जाता है।
- भाई को बैठाएँ। अपराह्न मुहूर्त (11 नवंबर 2026 को नई दिल्ली में दोपहर 1:10–3:20) में भाई को उत्तर या पूर्व मुख स्वच्छ आसन पर बैठाएँ; सिर पर रूमाल रखें।
- तिलक। भाई दूज की प्रार्थना बोलते हुए अनामिका से माथे पर रोली और अक्षत लगाएँ; दाहिनी कलाई पर कलावा बाँधें।
- आरती। घी के दीये से आरती करें, मिठाई अर्पित कर अपने हाथ से खिलाएँ; नारियल, पान और सुपारी दें।
- आशीर्वाद और उपहार। भाई बहन के चरण छूता है (या पारिवारिक परंपरा अनुसार बहन आशीर्वाद देती है) और उपहार देता है; भोजन बहन के घर साथ में होता है।

Bhai Dooj katha: Yama and Yamunaभाई दूज कथा: यम और यमुना
Yama, the lord of death, and Yamuna (Yami) are the twin children of Surya and Sanjna. Yamuna loved her brother dearly and kept inviting him to her home, but Yama, busy with his duty, never came.
At last, on Kartika Shukla Dwitiya, he arrived unannounced. Overjoyed, Yamuna bathed, put a tilak on his forehead, did his aarti and served him a feast with her own hands. Moved, Yama asked her to name a boon. She asked that every year on this day he come to her, and that any brother who receives tilak from his sister and eats at her home on this day be free from the fear of untimely death.
Yama granted it — so the day is called Yama Dwitiya, and a bath in the Yamuna on this day is held especially sacred at Mathura’s Vishram Ghat.
A second story: after killing Narakasura, Shri Krishna visited his sister Subhadra on this day; she welcomed him with a lamp, flowers, sweets and a tilak.
मृत्यु के देवता यम और यमुना (यमी) सूर्य और संज्ञा की जुड़वाँ संतान हैं। यमुना अपने भाई से बहुत स्नेह करती थीं और बार-बार उन्हें घर बुलाती थीं, पर अपने कर्तव्य में व्यस्त यम कभी नहीं आ पाते थे।
अंततः कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया को वे अचानक पहुँचे। आनंदित यमुना ने स्नान किया, उनके माथे पर तिलक लगाया, आरती की और अपने हाथों से भोजन कराया। प्रसन्न होकर यम ने वर माँगने को कहा। यमुना ने माँगा कि हर वर्ष इस दिन वे उनके घर आएँ, और जो भाई इस दिन बहन से तिलक लगवाकर उसके घर भोजन करे, उसे अकाल मृत्यु का भय न हो।
यम ने वर दिया — इसलिए यह दिन यम द्वितीया कहलाता है, और इस दिन मथुरा के विश्राम घाट पर यमुना स्नान विशेष पुण्यदायी माना जाता है।
दूसरी कथा: नरकासुर वध के बाद श्रीकृष्ण इस दिन अपनी बहन सुभद्रा से मिलने गए; सुभद्रा ने दीप, फूल, मिठाई और तिलक से उनका स्वागत किया।
