📜The birth of Dattaदत्त का जन्म
Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri, was famed for her chastity and devotion. To test her, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva came to her hermitage as mendicants and asked to be served food in an impossible way. By the power of her purity she turned them into infants and fed them like a mother.
When their consorts came and begged for their return, the three gods, pleased, granted Anasuya a boon: they would be born as her son. That son was Dattatreya — “given (datta) to Atri” — carrying all three in one form, with three faces, six arms, a cow and four dogs at his side.
अत्रि ऋषि की पत्नी अनसूया अपने सतीत्व और भक्ति के लिए प्रसिद्ध थीं। उनकी परीक्षा के लिए ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव भिक्षुक बनकर उनके आश्रम आए और असंभव ढंग से भोजन परोसने को कहा। अपनी पवित्रता के बल से उन्होंने तीनों को शिशु बना दिया और माँ की तरह भोजन कराया।
जब उनकी पत्नियाँ आकर उन्हें लौटाने की विनती करने लगीं, तो प्रसन्न होकर तीनों देवों ने अनसूया को वर दिया: वे उनके पुत्र के रूप में जन्म लेंगे। वही पुत्र दत्तात्रेय हुए — “अत्रि को दिए गए (दत्त)” — तीनों एक रूप में, तीन मुख, छह भुजाएँ, साथ में एक गाय और चार श्वान।

In the Bhagavata Purana (Canto 11), the avadhuta Dattatreya tells King Yadu that he learnt from twenty-four teachers in nature — the earth (patience), the wind (detachment), the sky (all-pervasiveness), water, fire, the moon, the sun, a pigeon, a python, the ocean, a moth, a bee, an elephant, a honey-gatherer, a deer, a fish, Pingala the courtesan, an osprey, a child, a maiden’s bangles, an arrow-maker, a serpent, a spider and a wasp.
The lesson: anyone and anything can be a teacher to a humble mind.
भागवत पुराण (एकादश स्कंध) में अवधूत दत्तात्रेय राजा यदु को बताते हैं कि उन्होंने प्रकृति के चौबीस गुरुओं से सीखा — पृथ्वी (धैर्य), वायु (अनासक्ति), आकाश (व्यापकता), जल, अग्नि, चंद्रमा, सूर्य, कबूतर, अजगर, समुद्र, पतंगा, मधुमक्खी, हाथी, मधु निकालने वाला, हिरण, मछली, पिंगला वेश्या, कुरर पक्षी, बालक, कुमारी की चूड़ियाँ, बाण बनाने वाला, सर्प, मकड़ी और भृंग।
