Eklingji Temple Udaipur

🕐 The Sacred Legend

Eklingji (the One Lingam) is the tutelary deity of the Mewar dynasty. The Maharana of Udaipur is traditionally considered the diwan (prime minister) of Eklingji — meaning Lord Shiva is the true king of Mewar. Founded by Bappa Rawal in 734 CE after the sage Harit Rashi initiated him into Shaivism here.

📜 History & Origin

Founded in 734 CE by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty, who is said to have been initiated by the sage Harit Rashi. The temple was destroyed by Alauddin Khilji in 1313 and rebuilt by Maharana Hamir. Further expansions by Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century gave it its current form. The Maharanas have maintained it as their royal temple for 1300 years.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

A large enclosed complex with the main Eklingji temple surrounded by 108 smaller shrines. The main temple has a five-story pyramidal tower. The four-faced Shivalinga (Chaturmukha Lingam) made of black marble depicts Shiva in four forms. Beautifully carved pillars and ceiling panels show scenes from Shiva Purana.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Five daily aartis. Abhishek with milk, water, and Panchamrit. Monday special puja when the Maharana traditionally offers prayers. Mahashivratri jagaran. The four-faced Lingam is bathed ceremonially with Ganga water.
