Pushkar Brahma Temple

🕐 The Sacred Legend

Lord Brahma chose Pushkar to perform a yajna. When his consort Saraswati was late, he married Gayatri to complete the ritual. Saraswati cursed him that he would be worshipped only at Pushkar — making this the only major Brahma temple in the world.

📜 History & Origin

The original temple is believed to have been built 2000 years ago. The current structure dates to the 14th century. It was rebuilt by the Maratha ruler Jagat Seth in the 18th century. The temple has survived multiple invasions and restorations. The red spire and the image of a hans (swan) on the temple flag are iconic symbols.

🏛 Architecture & Structure

Rajasthani style with a red sandstone shikhara topped with a gold finial. The temple has a distinctive red spire visible from across the lake. The main sanctum houses the four-faced idol of Brahma with his consort Gayatri on the left and Saraswati on the right. Silver turtles are installed in the floor of the outer hall.

🆣 Puja & Rituals

Morning aarti at 6:30 AM. Evening aarti at sunset. The Brahma Yajna performed here on Kartik Purnima is considered especially auspicious. Special puja on Basant Panchami. Priests chant Vedic hymns continuously during festival days.

Rail: Ajmer Railway Station (11 km) then bus/taxi to Pushkar. Air: Jaipur Airport (150 km). Road: Jaipur to Pushkar (145 km, 3 hrs); Ajmer to Pushkar (11 km). Regular buses from Ajmer to Pushkar.
