Shani शनि
Shani is the planet Saturn and the god of justice and karma — son of Surya and Chhaya, slow-moving and impartial. He is feared during Sade Sati but rewards honesty, discipline and service. He is worshipped on Saturdays with mustard oil and black sesame, and on Shani Jayanti.
शनि शनि ग्रह और न्याय तथा कर्म के देवता हैं — सूर्य और छाया के पुत्र, धीमे और निष्पक्ष। साढ़ेसाती में लोग उनसे डरते हैं, पर वे ईमानदारी, अनुशासन और सेवा का फल देते हैं। शनिवार को सरसों के तेल और काले तिल से, और शनि जयंती पर उनकी पूजा होती है।
Who is Shani?शनि कौन हैं?
Shani takes about thirty years to circle the zodiac, two and a half years in each sign. Sade Sati — the seven and a half years when he passes over one’s Moon sign and the signs either side — is traditionally a time of testing that teaches patience and humility.
His gaze is said to be heavy; even his father Surya was eclipsed by it. Yet Shani is a devotee of Shiva and promised Hanuman never to trouble Hanuman’s devotees, so Saturday worship often includes both. Feeding the poor, helping labourers and keeping one’s word are the surest remedies.
शनि लगभग तीस वर्ष में राशिचक्र पूरा करते हैं, हर राशि में ढाई वर्ष। साढ़ेसाती — वे साढ़े सात वर्ष जब वे चंद्र राशि और उसके दोनों ओर की राशियों से गुज़रते हैं — परंपरा से परीक्षा का समय है जो धैर्य और विनम्रता सिखाता है।
उनकी दृष्टि भारी मानी जाती है; उनके पिता सूर्य को भी उससे ग्रहण लगा। फिर भी शनि शिव भक्त हैं और उन्होंने हनुमान को वचन दिया कि उनके भक्तों को कष्ट नहीं देंगे, इसलिए शनिवार की पूजा में प्रायः दोनों होते हैं। गरीबों को भोजन, श्रमिकों की सहायता और वचन निभाना सबसे पक्के उपाय हैं।

Shani and Hanumanशनि और हनुमान
In one story Ravana had imprisoned the planets; Hanuman freed Shani from Lanka. Grateful, Shani promised he would not trouble anyone who worships Hanuman. In another, Hanuman soothed Shani’s wounds with oil after a fight — why oil is offered on Saturdays.
एक कथा में रावण ने ग्रहों को बंदी बना रखा था; हनुमान ने लंका से शनि को मुक्त किया। कृतज्ञ शनि ने वचन दिया कि हनुमान के उपासकों को कष्ट नहीं देंगे। दूसरी कथा में युद्ध के बाद हनुमान ने शनि के घावों पर तेल लगाया — इसीलिए शनिवार को तेल चढ़ता है।
