With the water flowing from the forest of his matted hair purifying the ground, with a great serpent hanging like a garland at his neck, his damaru sounding “damad damad damad”, Shiva danced the fierce Tandava — may that Shiva bring us auspiciousness.

My delight is ever in the one whose head shines with the restless waves of the celestial river whirling in the cauldron of his locks, whose forehead blazes with fire, and who wears the young crescent moon as his crest.

May my mind find joy in the one clad in the directions, the playful companion of the mountain’s daughter, whose heart rejoices in all beings to the ends of space, and whose stream of compassionate glances ends even unbearable troubles.

May we gain the treasure of the matted-haired Lord, who burnt the god of love with the spark of fire on his broad forehead, before whom the gods bow, and whose head shines with the crescent moon.

My delight is in the three-eyed one, who offered the five-arrowed god of love into the fire blazing on his fierce forehead, the one artist who draws designs on the breast of the mountain’s daughter.

Meaning

I worship the one whose neck shines dark like a full-blown blue lotus — destroyer of Kama, of Tripura, of worldly bondage, of Daksha’s sacrifice, of the elephant demon, of Andhaka, and of death itself.

Verse 10

Meaning

I worship the one who, like a bee, enjoys the honey of the auspicious arts of Parvati — the end of Kama, of Tripura, of worldly bondage, of the sacrifice, of the elephant demon, of Andhaka and of death.

Verse 11

Meaning

Victory to Shiva, whose fierce Tandava keeps time to the deep auspicious beat of the mridanga — “dhimid dhimid” — while fire bursts from his forehead with the hissing breath of the whirling serpents.

Verse 12

Trinaravindachakshushoh prajamahimahendrayoh
Samam pravartayanmanah kada sadashivam bhaje 12
Meaning

When will I worship Sadashiva with an even mind — seeing alike a bed of stone and a soft bed, a snake and a pearl necklace, a jewel and a clod of earth, friend and foe, a blade of grass and a lotus-eyed beauty, the common people and the king?

Verse 13

Vimuktalolalochano lalamabhalalagnakah
Shiveti mantramuchcharan kada sukhi bhavamyaham 13
Meaning

When will I be happy, living in a hollow by the celestial river, free of evil thoughts, my joined palms ever raised to my head, my restless eyes stilled, chanting “Shiva”, with the mark of Shiva on my forehead?

Verse 14

Pathansmaranbruvannaro vishuddhimeti santatam
Hare gurau subhaktimashu yati nanyatha gatim
Vimohanam hi dehinam sushankarasya chintanam 14
Meaning

Whoever reads, remembers or recites this supreme hymn is always purified and soon gains devotion to Hara, the Guru; there is no other way — the thought of Shankara removes the delusion of embodied beings.

Verse 15

Lakshmim sadaiva sumukhim pradadati shambhuh 15
Meaning

To whoever, at the end of worship in the Pradosh hour, recites this hymn sung by the ten-headed one (Ravana), Shambhu grants steady prosperity — with chariots, elephants and horses — and a kindly face.
